Dongdaemun Shopping Complex: Seoul’s Best Fabric, Craft Supplies, and Sewing Market Guide

Do you like to sew? Have you tried jewlery making? Whether you’re a hobby crafter, quilter, or you’re in business and looking to source textiles, the Dongdaemun Shopping Complex is a must-visit during your trip to Seoul. One of the largest markets of textile and fabric suppliers in Korea, this multi-block, multi-building center is bound to have something for everyone. I first visited the place while my mother, an avid quilter, was visiting. I was not prepared for the sheer volume of merchants and stalls of fabrics, buttons, and virtually every sewing supply imaginable.

If you don’t speak Korean, I’d highly recommend trying to hire or find a guide willing to go with you, especially if it’s your first time. Even with my intermediate level of Korean language skills I struggled to ask about specific fabric terms, such as how much for one yard/meter of fabric? Having a Korean person with you will ensure you get a fair deal. Based on my most recent visit to the complex, it’s my feeling that some of the vendors are not above ripping off foreign people, especially tourists which is not really typical for Korea, but in places where many tourists visits sometimes is the case. In any event, it’s overwhelming so having a local there to help is going to be a huge plus for your experience.
